Road named after Alsager family

Community Impact

Planning Director Andrew Taylor, DWH site manager Martin Prendergast , Mrs Bennion and Mr Bennion

Barratt and David Wilson Homes North West has honoured a local Alsager family, by naming a street at its Scholar’s Place development, Charles Bennion Road after the farmer who used to own the land.

The Bennion family formerly farmed the land that the development is now built on, before it was the subject of a compulsory purchase order in 1940.

Charles Henry Bennion was the owner of the land prior to World War II and his Grandson Charles Richard Bennion has fond memories of playing on the land as a young child, which has become poignant in recent years as he now suffers from Alzheimer’s.

As a keepsake for his memory of the land, Barratt and David Wilson Homes has given Charles Bennion and his wife Vera some plant pots including soil from the development for the couple to keep at home.

Vera Bennion, Charles Richard Bennion’s, wife said, “I am so touched by all that has been done by everyone at Barratt and David Wilson Homes to make this such a memorable experience for my husband, especially before his Alzheimer’s really does take a hold and his memory is lost for all time.

“I have heard over many years now, my husband was very close to his Grandpa Bennion and the road naming and plant pots mean so much to him.”

Andrew Taylor, Planning Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North West said, “It is important to us as a leading housebuilder to preserve the history of our developments wherever we can.

“We are pleased that the Bennions will be remembered in Alsager for the role they played in farming this land for so many years.”

The Scholar’s Place development, located on Hassall Road, will host a range of one to five bedroom homes.
