Lancashire Girlguiding group receives donation for campsite maintenance

Community Impact, North West Community Fund

April 29, 2021 Lancashire Girlguiding group receives donation for campsite maintenance
Silver Sapling Campsite in Silverdale, Lancashire has received a £1,500 donation as part of the North West Community Fund programme.

The campsite is run entirely by volunteers. Enclosed by woodland, the campsite aims to provide a fun experience for Girlguiding members, family camps, schools, and other non-Guide associations.

Elaine Clare, Chair of the Silver Sapling Campsite’s management committee, said: “The campsite is a valuable resource in our local community and is open to many charitable groups for hire. Our aim is to offer camping and environmental opportunities in a safe enclosed area for children and young people.

“The donation will go towards equipment that will allow us to manage the site efficiently and enhance the local environment. We’re currently travelling back and forth to site each month cut back brambles, weeds, and saplings by hand with pruners and a rake.

“Proper equipment will make this easier and take less time, meaning we can focus our attention elsewhere, and we are hoping that proper maintenance will enhance the site, attracting more local wildlife, and as a whole be a more pleasant environment for the local community to visit.”

The campsite is located a short distance away from Eaves Wood Nature Reserve and supplies multiple activities on site, such as archery, go carts, grass sledges, and a large marquee for events and fundraising. Unfortunately, all of the campsite’s fundraising events were forced to be cancelled due to Coronavirus.

Philippa Stewart, Head of Sales at David Wilson Homes North West, said: “As one of the UK’s leading developers, it is really important that we support charities and local organisations in our surrounding area.

“The Silver Sapling Campsite is a great example of a small organisation going the extra mile for their community. We have had a longstanding partnership with the RSPB, and it we are pleased to support the site in their efforts to support local wildlife and create a pleasant outdoor space.”

Elaine continued: “It’s really important to us that people support local causes, as we are the grass roots of the community. We give hands on support and adventure to children and young people through our camping and woodcraft experiences.

“When larger organisations such as David Wilson Homes can support smaller causes, it helps us feel appreciated and recognised, and confirms that we’re making a difference.

“We’re very grateful for this generous donation. It will make a huge difference to our work and assist our volunteers enormously.”
