A Cheshire charity received a £1,500 grant to support the restoration works on a community church.
We made the contribution to The Nantwich Parish Church Preservation Appeal Trust to support its efforts to repair and restore St Mary’s Church in Nantwich.
The Trust, based close to our Maylands Park development, had accumulated sufficient funds to carry out phase one of the restoration of the north and east sides of the church, and our donation went towards the second phase.
Paul Ramsey, Chairman of The Nantwich Parish Church Preservation Appeal Trust, said: “Funds in the past have been from several grants and legacies, which have enabled us to restore the south and west sides. The donation from David Wilson Homes will be used to fund the stonework, which is specified as being at risk and needs to be carried out by skilled stonemasons.
“Our charity’s goal is to raise funds to bring about the full restoration of the church so that it is fit for purpose as a building for a wide range of activities, with the need for only day-to-day maintenance.”
The Nantwich Parish Church Preservation Appeal Trust was set up in 1978 to raise funds for the restoration and repair of the fabric of St Mary’s Church in Nantwich. Whilst awaiting larger renovation projects, the church was put on the At Risk Register by Historic England until the work is complete.
Claire Jarvis, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes North West, said: “St Mary’s Church is an important community hub in Nantwich for many reasons, and we are pleased to support the renovation works being undertaken by The Nantwich Parish Church Preservation Appeal Trust.
“We hope our contribution helps the charity on its way to raising the funds required to complete the essential works to restore the church to its pristine condition.”
St Mary’s, the parish church in Nantwich since the 14th Century, is open every day of the week for visitors and for private prayer, whilst offering worship on Sundays. It is also the venue for concerts, civic services and special occasions, such as the annual Holly Holy Day in January to commemorate the Battle of Nantwich in 1644.
