Project Support

A £1,500 donation went to Freshfields Animal Rescue to support rescued animals finding the care that they need.
Established 45 years ago, the charity’s founder, Lesley Tarleton, vowed that a healthy animal would never be put to sleep simply because its owner didn’t want them.
Since that day, Freshfields has provided new loving homes to 100,000 animals. It has rescued, rehabilitated and either rehomed or released (in terms of wildlife) over 1,000 animals and birds every year.
Our funding has gone towards the care for dogs, cats, rabbits, small animals, horses and farm animals, as well as the charity’s efforts to tackle threats to urban wildlife, particularly hedgehogs and wild birds.
Deb Hughes, Grants Officer at Freshfields Animal Rescue said: “Excellent medical care is at the heart of what we do. We simply must be able to keep our doors open and stop the suffering with medical care, safety, patience and love.
“Even with the cost efficiencies of our on-site vet facility, vet bills remain one of our biggest expenses. It’s vital that we do preventative health work with the animals as this can avoid the need for further, more complex and expensive procedures later.”
Freshfields Animal Rescue has two centres; Ince Blundell in Merseyside and Caernarfon in North Wales. Across both sites it cares for 300 creatures every day, the local communities have come to rely on Freshfields as their first port of call when they have sick, injured or abandoned animals that they need assistance with.
Deb continued: “Pets are still abandoned for the usual social problems such as long-term ill-health and homelessness, and this has been compounded by the impact of the cost-of-living crisis in our local communities.
“We have been facing an overpopulation of animals in the UK for decades. Purposeful and unintended breeding is out of control to a shocking scale. COVID-19 resulted in three million more pets being irresponsibly bred.
“We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to David Wilson Homes for its very kind donation. It will make a difference to the lives of hundreds of frightened, traumatised animals, and will give them new hope and the chance of a new life.”
Claire Jarvis, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes North West, said: “The work Freshfields Animal Rescue carries out to support unloved animals is heartwarming, and we are proud to support such a worthy cause.
“We’re pleased to make a Community Fund donation of £1,500, and hope the charity can continue its excellent services for many years to come and assist as many animals in need as it can.”
