Project Support
September 25, 2012
David Wilson Homes North West has supported the RAF Burtonwood Heritage Association through its popular North West Community Fund scheme, which provides support to local community groups.
RAF Burtonwood was a major air base from 1939, throughout all of World Ward II, the Berlin Airlift and the Cold War until its closure in 1993. Following its closure, the base was demolished and parts of the land were redeveloped – Chapelford Village now forms a substantial part of this successful redevelopment.
The RAF Burtonwood Association was formed to keep alive the memory of all who served at the base and stands as a tribute to what was achieved there. The support provided by David Wilson Homes has enabled them to purchase a large marquee, which has since been used at a number of local events, including the launch of Dakota Park, which sits at the heart of Chapelford Village in Warrington and offers the local community a large green open space to enjoy.
Peter Quinn, Association Secretary at the RAF Burtonwood Heritage Association explains: “Every year we arrange numerous events to celebrate the history of this site including presentations to local schools, dances and reunion weekends. We were preparing for the UK/US reunion weekend when we discovered our North West Community Fund application had been successful.
“The generous donation from David Wilson Homes North West provided us with a huge boost and enabled us to purchase a magnificent marquee and equipment which we were delighted to use for the first time at our reunion weekend which coincided with launch of Dakota Park earlier this summer. Since this event we have used the marquee on numerous occasions and are extremely grateful for the support.”
Graham Swann, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes North West, comments: “We are very pleased to support the RAF Burtonwood Association and are delighted the funding has been put to good use, enhancing the charity’s events.
“Working with schools, institutions and welfare groups in the Warrington area, the RAF Burtonwood Association works hard to encourage local people to become involved with the history on their door steps.
“We have honoured Chapelford’s US airforce heritage by naming the roads on Chapelford Village after American states and cities. For example, Alaska Mews, Dallas Drive and Pasadena Avenue have recently been joined by a Kentucky Close!”
